Surgical simulation

Simulation moves the early part of the learning curve away from the patient. It allows deliberate, repeated practice with feedback — the conditions under which technical skill is actually acquired.

Levels of simulation

Part-task trainers cover single skills such as knot tying or port placement. Bench and box trainers add hand-eye coordination through a camera view. Virtual reality platforms add objective metrics. Cadaveric and high-fidelity models sit at the top of the ladder, reproducing anatomy and tissue handling closely enough to rehearse a full procedure.

Effective programmes combine levels rather than choosing one: high repetition at the low-fidelity end, and low-volume, high-realism rehearsal before a complex case.

Simulation in device adoption

Introducing new technology is a simulation problem too. Before a device is used clinically, the team benefits from handling it, seeing its effect on tissue at a dry station, and walking through the setup, troubleshooting and disposal steps.
